What is the difference between laser and IPL?

The biggest difference between IPL and laser hair removal is the way the light is delivered. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses a broad spectrum of pulsed light containing multiple wavelengths, while a laser produces a much narrower, more concentrated wavelength of light. Both technologies work on the same basic principle: light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, converted into heat, and directed towards the hair follicle to progressively reduce its ability to produce new hair. Professional laser systems may use different wavelengths depending on the skin and hair being treated. Common examples include 755 nm Alexandrite, around 808–810 nm diode, and 1064 nm Nd:YAG. The 808–810 nm range offers a useful balance of penetration and melanin absorption and is widely used for many hair and skin combinations. The deeper-penetrating 1064 nm wavelength has lower melanin absorption in the surface of the skin, making it particularly valuable for treating darker skin tones when used appropriately.

IPL approaches the problem differently. Rather than relying on one narrow laser wavelength, it uses filtered broadband light, allowing a range of wavelengths to reach the treatment area during each pulse. This also makes IPL technology highly versatile: depending on the device and its optical filters, it can be designed not only for hair reduction but also for applications such as skin rejuvenation and acne care.

However, wavelength alone does not determine how effective a treatment will be. Energy level, pulse characteristics, treatment frequency, hair colour, hair thickness, skin tone, and the stage of the hair-growth cycle all influence the result. Darker, more heavily pigmented hairs generally absorb light more effectively, while very light blonde, grey, white, or red hair may respond poorly because there is not enough melanin in the hair to absorb the required light energy.

This is also why comparing IPL and laser simply by asking “Which one is more powerful?” can be misleading. A professional laser may deliver highly concentrated energy to a very specific target, while a well-designed IPL system can treat a larger area with each flash and offers the convenience of repeated treatments at home. The more useful question is therefore: which technology, wavelength, energy level, and treatment schedule are best suited to your skin, hair, and treatment goals?
